Born at Guernsey. Son of James Pile & Rebecca Marks of Charroterie Cottage, Park Rd, St Peter Port, Guernsey.

Calliope, on voyage from Sevilla to Newport with a cargo of iron ore, was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-155 (Kapitänleutnant Karl Meusel) in position 35°N-17°W, 150 miles North of Madeira. All 27 crew died.

Died at sea, aged 33 years.
