It was Baron Manfred von Richthofen's protégé, German Ace Karl Allmenröder, who brought down the plane in which Frederick was Observer.

It crashed behind enemy lines on 25 April 1917 and he was taken as a Prisoner of War to Rennbahn in Germany. He died of heart failure in hospital in Munster a year later aged 20 and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery.
