*Military Medal citation (London Gazette 30172 (page 6844) of 06/07/1917 reads:

“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the action of April 9th 1917, at Vimy Ridge. He took part in the attack to the final objective when he led his platoon over the crest of the hill nearly to the foot of La Folie Wood, disposing them in such a manner that formed a covering party to the platoon consolidating the strong point. One Lewis Gun crew being knocked out he carried forward the gun himself under most severe machine gun and sniper fire, and fought the gun alone for thirty minutes, succeeding in subduing the enemy's machine gun and sniper fire until it was possible for the consolidation of the strong point to be carried out. It was undoubtedly due to his courage and presence of mind in carrying forward the gun that the strong point was consolidated as the enemy's snipers were rapidly picking off the men who were working, the position being extremely exposed.”
