NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Friday 16 August 1918

Roll of Honour. A few days ago Mrs Chappel of 2 Grove Street, owing to a mis-reading of a telegram, was under the impression that her husband, Private Sidney T R Chappel of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, who has been serving in the East for some 3 years, was arriving on leave and proceeded to the pier to meet him only to be disappointed. Her sorrow can thus be imagined when we state that she has now received a telegram stating that her husband passed away on Tuesday 6 August of heat stroke at Basra. The deceased soldier, who was 31, was a reservist and was a popular and highly respected member of the clerical staff of Orviss Ltd when he rejoined the Colours at the outbreak of war. He had since been serving in Gallipoli, Egypt and Mesopotamia. To the widow, nee Miss Lillian Gaudin, and other relatives we tender our heartfelt condolences.
