NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Thursday 17 May 1917

Roll of Honour. Yet another well known resident serving with the East Surrey Regiment, Corporal J Finch, made the supreme sacrifice during the heavy fighting on 3 May. Last weekend Mrs Finch received a letter from a comrade of her husband which stated that the writer had seen the Corporal fall during the advance, shot through the lungs. It had been hoped that more favourable news would be received but nothing further has been heard and the unofficial information seems unfortunately to be true. The late Corporal, who was formerly employed as a porter at Au Gagne Petit, joined the Colours soon after the outbreak of war and had previously been wounded and returned to the Front only a few months ago. To the widow and family we tender our heartfelt sympathy.
