NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post
of Friday 28 June 1918
Roll of Honour. We regret to announce that Mr Charles
Fox of King Street yesterday received the following letter
from the Reverend G H Maidment, Chaplain to the Forces,
conveying the sad news that his second son, Lance Corporal
Charles George Fox (Georgie) of the Hampshire Regiment,
has made the supreme sacrifice. The letter reads "France
21 June 1918. My dear Mrs Fox, I wish to write to offer
you a word of sympathy in what must be to you a great
bereavement, the death of your dear son. He was killed,
as I expect you have already heard officially, on 17th
of this month, he died a most gallant death bravely trying
to carry on in his duty. You will be comforted to know
that his death was practically instantaneous and painless,
I am sorry, however, I cannot yet tell you where he is
buried, but in due course if I can find his grave I will
let you know. Your boy was one of my communicants and
it will comfort you to know that I gave him the Blessed
Sacrament on the Sunday before he went in the line. Again
assuring you of my deepest sympathy I am, yours faithfully,
G H MAIDMENT. Chaplain". The late Lance Corporal
was a general favourite and when 18 volunteered and left
with the Jersey Company Royal Irish Rifles. Beyond a brief
spell when he was wounded and two brief furloughs he had
been in France since 1915, he was a cheerful and efficient
soldier and scores of friends will hear with deep regret
of the decease of another loyal young Jerseyman who had
received a Divisional Parchment placing on record his
gallantry and devotion in the field. We tender the parents
and the brother, Corporal H Fox who has recently been
discharged through severe injuries, and the sister our
heartfelt sympathy.....
