H.M.S. "Opal" was wrecked in violent gale and snow storm whilst returning to Scapa Flow. She ran aground on the Clett of Crura.

NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Saturday 19 January 1918

Roll of Honour. Mrs Le Gros of 8 Sand Street has received an official intimation that her son, Able Seaman Ernest Le Gros, was lost at sea during a recent gale. The deceased, who was 38, joined the merchant service as a lad and remained in it until some 2 years ago when he entered the Royal Navy. He was in the Island about 10 weeks ago.
