NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Thursday 10 January 1918

How Major G Messervy Won the Military Cross. A special supplement of the London Gazette issued for publication this morning contains a statement of the services for which the award of decorations was announced in the Gazette of 26 September 1917. Included is Captain (acting Major) Gerald Messervy, Royal Field Artillery, for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, when under heavy shellfire with his Battery he went into a burning dug-out in which ammunition was exploding and put out the fire with the assistance of a Bombardier. By his prompt initiative and coolness he saved a serious explosion which would have involved great loss of life as he prevented the fire from spreading to other shelters and gun pits.
