Notice of Death appears in Jersey Evening Post of Saturday 2 June 1917

NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Wednesday 16 May 1917

Roll of Honour. Frederick (Jimmy) Newson, the hero of many a hard fight on the football field, has been called upon to make the supreme sacrifice whilst playing the greater game in France. The sad news having been conveyed to Mrs Newson, who resides in Cannon Street, in the following letter. "East Surrey Regiment. BEF. 11 May. Dear Mrs Newson, I deeply regret that I have to inform you that your husband was killed in action on 3 May. He was a splendid Sergeant and a fine sportsman and played for the Regimental team. He was liked by all the officers and men and his place will not be easily filled in the Company. His Platoon Officer was killed also and although the platoon suffered heavily they did splendidly. If there is anything I can do for you please let me know. I will close by expressing my deepest sympathy for you in your bereavement. Yours sincerely, KENNETH L IRVING". Sergeant Newson, who was 31, was well known as a prominent player of the East Surrey's football team when the Regiment was stationed here and retiring from the Colours he settled in the Island. He joined the Jersey Wanderers and was one of the Club's most prominent forwards. At the outbreak of war he re-joined and went to the Front where he was wounded. He returned to England and for a time acted as instructor but later went out again with another Battalion of his old Regiment. We tender the widow and other relatives our sincere sympathy.
