NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Wednesday 16 May 1917

Sad Death of A Recruit. Yesterday morning Mr F Renouf of Faldouet received a telegram stating that his son Wilford, who left here with a contingent about a month since, has passed away at Salisbury Hospital. No information as to the cause of death has yet been received, but the father and a brother left the Island by yesterday afternoons boat and the interment is fixed for tomorrow afternoon. Young Renouf was only 18 years and 6 months old and great sympathy is felt for the parents and family at their loss, we would offer them our sincere condolences.

*****

“According to family history, Wilford Renouf died through drinking contaminated water from a field whilst on a training march in England. It was believed that fertilisers that farmers used on their crops were the cause, and Wilford was dead within a few hours of drinking the water.”
