Death of a Jersey Volunteer in Ireland.
It is with the deepest regret we chronicle the death
which took place last night in Ireland of Private A
Richards of the Jersey Company of the 7th Battalion
Royal Irish Rifles. This loyal soldier was the son of
Mr J Richards of Belmont Road and was one of the most
popular members of the Town Battalion. When the call
came he was amongst the first to volunteer and was one
of the most cheerful members of the gallant Company
who sailed on the SS Ibex some 3 months ago. Unfortunately
after a few weeks stay at Buttevant he was seized with
illness which was diagnosed as typhoid and he was removed
to County Cork for treatment. He seemed to be on the
road to recovery but a relapse set in and for the last
few weeks his relatives and friends in the Island have
been receiving telegrams almost daily on his condition.
Hopes were entertained that his strong constitution
would pull him through but the dread fever had such
a hold on him that he was unable to shake it off and
to the general regret of the loyal lads in Ireland and
to his friends here it was announced that no hope could
be entertained for his recovery and, as stated above,
he passed away last evening in his 25th year. To his
relatives and friends we beg to offer our sincere condolences
in their bereavement. The interment we understand will
take place in Ireland and will be attended by the Jersey
Company Royal Irish Rifles.
