NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post
of Saturday 30 March 1918
Roll of Honour. It is with regret we chronicle
the death of a loyal and gallant Jerseyman who was killed
during the first days of the great German offensive,
we refer to Lance Corporal Fred Sewell, son of Mr &
Mrs Sewell of 20 Union Street. This hero, who was highly
respected locally, was in his 23rd year and joined the
Royal Navy in November 1913, he was invalided out in
1916 as a result of injuries received on active service,
but loyally again volunteered and in July of that year
joined the South Lancashire Regiment. He was in the
Island on leave from France last month and had only
rejoined his unit a short time before the offensive
commenced. The parents yesterday received a letter from
the officer of the Lewis Gun Section in which their
son was serving, this stating that the writer and Sewell
were the last men left to work the gun, the NCO was
however killed by a bullet through the neck and the
officer, who was wounded, is now in hospital in London,
he however saved the NCOs personal effects which he
will forward later. We tender the bereaved family our
heartfelt sympathy.
