NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Thursday 28 September 1916

Roll of Honour. As we stated yesterday Mr & Mrs F Smith of 19 Saville Street have received news that their only son, Private Francis Henry Smith of the 58th Battalion Canadian Infantry, has made the supreme sacrifice. This loyal soldier, who was in his 25th year, had been at the Front for some time past and was a most efficient soldier. The news was conveyed to the bereaved parents by a Sister of the SSM Hospital Somewhere in France who wrote "Dear Mrs Smith, Just a few lines to tell you that your son, Private F H Smith, came into hospital severely wounded in the abdomen with a gun shot wound on 21 September. His condition was most serious but he did not suffer any pain being unconscious off and on. He was talking a little to me yesterday afternoon and I told him I would be writing to you to tell you he was in hospital and he sent you his love. He became much worse towards evening and died at 9pm on 22nd. He will be buried in this village today and his grave will always be carefully kept. If you care to send a wreath or cross for his grave or artificial flowers I will put it on his grave for you. His belongings you will receive later. My deepest sympathy.

Yours sincerely, KATHLEEN HOLMES, Sister QASMNS".

We offer the parents and sister, Mrs G Thomas, our sincere sympathy in their sorrow.
