NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Thursday 5 September 1918

Jersey Family's Tragic News - One Son Killed Another in Hospital. Much sympathy will be felt for Mr & Mrs Smith of Wrentham Hall, St Martins who have received the sad news of the death in action of their eldest son, Private George Harry Smith who was instantaneously killed by a shell in France on 24 August. At the outbreak of war this loyal soldier was amongst the first volunteers, he joining the London Regiment in August 1914. He quickly proceeded to France and after being wounded was transferred to the Trench Mortar Battery, with whom he was serving at the time of his death. The deceased was in his 35th year and had been at the Front for 4 years. What makes the news all the more tragic is that Mr & Mrs Smith were expecting their son on leave after 2 years absence. In addition they have received information that their youngest son, V B Smith of the Royal Air Force, a well known vocalist who has been serving in France for 2 years as a despatch rider, is now in hospital in Nottingham suffering from illness. We tender the bereaved family our sincere sympathy at the loss they have sustained and express the hope that favourable news will shortly be received of the son in hospital.
