Notice of Death appears in Jersey
Evening Post of Tuesday 9 January 1917
NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post
of Tuesday 9 January 1917
Roll of Honour. Peculiar sadness surrounds
the death of the two gallant brothers, Company Sergeant
Major J J Smith of the Canadians and Ernest D Smith
of the Post Office Rifles, both sons of Mr Joseph H
Smith of 24 Burrard Street, as the announcement of their
decease takes place simultaneously with that of their
mother who passed away this morning at her residence
after a long and painful illness. The eldest son, Company
Sergeant Major J J Smith, was at one time a telegraph
messenger at the GPO and left for Canada some 5 years
ago. He joined the colours soon after the outbreak of
war and soon received promotion, being latterly Company
Sergeant Major in 75th Canadian Regiment. During one
of the engagements in November last he was seriously
wounded and unfortunately died as a result of his injuries.
Ernest D Smith, second son of Mr J H Smith, was formerly
employed as a postman at the local GPO and when the
call came joined the Post Office Rifles. He had been
in France for some time and after an attack on the enemies
position on 7 October 1916 the Rifleman was reported
missing. Nothing further has been heard of the soldier
and it is now presumed that he was killed on the above
date. We feel sure that the sympathy of all our readers
will be extended to the family in their triple bereavement.
