NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post
of Saturday 3 February 1917
Roll of Honour. We regret to announce
the death which has taken place as the result of serious
wounds received in action of Corporal Arthur J Syvret
of the Australians. The deceased soldier, who was 28,
was the son of Captain John Syvret who left Jersey for
Adelaide some 30 years ago. He was one of the first
loyal Colonials to respond to the call of the Motherland
and took part with the gallant ANZACs at the memorable
landing at Gallipoli, where he was wounded. After being
in hospital for some time he came to this Island, the
home of his forefathers, in January last on a visit
to his uncle, Captain Philip Syvret of St Lukes. A few
weeks later he proceeded to France and took part in
the heavy fighting at the Somme. Early in December his
left leg was blown away by a bursting shell and though
everything possible was done for him whilst in hospital
in France he passed away owing to the terrible injuries.
We tender the relatives our sincere sympathy in their
bereavement.
