NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Wednesday 19 June 1918

Roll of Honour. The many friends of Gunner George Tierney of the Royal Garrison Artillery will regret to learn that his wife, who resides in St Helier, yesterday received a letter stating that her husband had made the supreme sacrifice. The distressing information was conveyed by the Section Commander who states that the Gunner was instantaneously killed by shell fire, the writer adds "I feel his loss very much as he was a fearless soldier and greatly devoted to duty. He was always willing to help anyone when help was required, there is only one thing more to say, he died a glorious death". The late Gunner, who was 32, joined up some 2 years ago and was previously employed at Messrs Lipscombes as a driver. He was a most efficient soldier and had a large circle of acquaintances and friends who will join us in tending the widow, who is left with a young son, our heartfelt sympathy.
