NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Thursday 8 June 1916

NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Monday 12 June 1916

Roll of Honour. Mr & Mrs Watts of 17 Devonshire Place received news yesterday from the Admiralty that their son, A G Watts, was not in the list of men saved from HMS Hampshire and must be regarded as lost. A message of sympathy was also enclosed from the King and Queen. Mr & Mrs Watts have another son serving in the Royal Navy and two sons and a son-in-law in the Army. It was only on Thursday last that a letter was received from the deceased sailor stating that he had come safely through the naval battle. We offer the bereaved parents our heartfelt sympathy.

A total of 26 Jerseymen are believed to have lost their lives in the Naval Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 and on HMS Hampshire which sank on 6 June 1916 after striking a mine off the Orkneys.
