NEWS ITEM in Jersey Evening Post of Thursday 2 November 1916

Roll of Honour. After taking part in the gallant defence of Kut al Amara another Jerseyman, Private Philip Harold Whitley of the 5th East Surreys, has died at Baghdad of disease contracted during the prolonged stay at Kut under such terrible conditions. Private Whitley was the son of the late Mr Philip Whitley and Mrs Whitley now of Wimbledon, and grandson of the late Mr P Whitley of Les Banques, Gorey. He held a splendid position on the staff of the Electricians at the GPO London, which he gave up in the first few days of the war to join the East Surreys, with whom he proceeded to India. He was afterwards selected to join a Wireless Section with the Mesopotamia force and was taken ill at Kut, but was not one of those fortunate men who were allowed by the Turks to leave the place, but was forced to proceed to Baghdad, where he died on 31 May last in his 32nd year. We feel sure the sympathy of all our readers is extended to the family in their bereavement.
